Basically what I have created is a mountain range, as you can see without the volcanic eruption it would probably be a very calm night scene.

try antialiasing the lava?

Anti aliasing the lava didn't look too great when I tried it, I found that using the pencil tool was a lot better as it gave it more of a lava flowing feel.
